Step-by-Step Guide: Making Mugs with Pottery Slab Templates

|Fran Aldea

A free tutorial, paired with my printable pottery templates.

Every design I make follows the same three-step sequence: forming the Body, adding the Bottom, and attaching the Handle. Learn it once, and you can build any form in the collection, from a simple mug to more layered vessels.

Below: a short video walkthrough, followed by a full photo tutorial.

The templates from my collection can be printed at 100% scale, but remember that they work at any scale. You can size up or down in your printer settings to make your shapes larger or smaller depending on your preference.

Magic Slip

Use a mix of vinegar with water and clay dust for a magic slip that works like glue. Specially great for when you have to fix hairline cracks.

Assembly Process

The slab-building sequence moves from forming the Body to adding the Bottom, then attaching Handle. This same sequence technique can be used for building any of my designs, from simple mugs to more complex forms.

Clay Moisture

If your clay feels too wet and sticky, lay it on your canvas for a few minutes. The canvas will absorb some of the excess moisture, making the clay easier to work with. Just be careful not to let it dry out too much.

Template Preparation

  • Use high-quality, printable paper
  • Print template at full size
  • Carefully cut out each template piece
  • Optional: Laminate for repeated use or trace onto balsa wood
  • Optional: Cookie cutters are great for cutting bases, plates, and/or handles

Clay Preparation Tips

  • Recommended clay thickness: 3-5mm (1/8 - 1/4 inch)
  • Roll clay on canvas or smooth surface
  • Flip and turn many times if your slab is too thick
  • Use consistent pressure when rolling for even thickness
  • If clay is too wet, let it rest 10-15 minutes after rolling for optimal workability

Cutting Guidelines

  • Place template on rolled clay
  • Use craft knife to trace around template
  • Cut smoothly and steadily
  • Remove excess clay carefully
  • Store excess clay in a bag and use in other project
